100 Stars in the Sky

100 Stars in the Sky are 100 tips for Social Practice Artists.

They have been developed as a self-supporting method inviting creative practitioners to choose a selection of tips as guides for any given project, situation or process. The collection of tips, or stars, become a personal constellation. Each tip comes with steps to help you reach that star. The aim is to help artists discuss how they can navigate creative projects without feeling overwhelmed. The final collection will become a shareable resource that helps us care for ourselves and one another.

The project was developed initially to support the project en(shrine) and further developed as part of the Social Art For Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (SAFEDI) fellowship.

Instructions

Scan the list and pick out 5 to 10 that fit your current needs. Then choose 3 to enact immediately. Each star comes with steps to reach it or achieve the suggestion. Keep that constellation of stars until you need a new perspective on things. Then collect a new series of stars and if you need to repeat any, include them.

Keep these clusters of stars as your expanding galaxy. Consider this list as a constellation of tiny points of light that lead to giant stars of knowledge and understanding.

The first iteration of this project, before it develops into a printed training resource, is a campaign on Instagram. Artists and creative practitioners who follow the account will discover 3 new stars, published weekly, from Summer 2022.

100 Stars Residents: digital residencies via the 100 stars Instagram ‘stories’ where artists share how they have built their own constellations using the resource and show documentation of how it has been applied in their practice. Once the ‘residency’ is over (e.g. 1 day, or 1 week) it is saved as a highlight reel for future reference.

The aim of 100 stars is to promote reflection and discussion – so audience engagement is key. The page will be monitored regularly to respond to and begin conversations which will no doubt shape future iterations of the project.
