Social Art Summit Co-Conveners

Founders of Social Art Network, Eelyn Lee & R.M. Sanchez-Camus were joined by guest artist Ian Nesbitt to convene this year’s Social Art Summit.

Eelyn Lee

Eelyn Lee is an award-winning artist and filmmaker based in Sheffield who has shown work at Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Barbican, Palais de Tokyo and international film festivals. With a socially engaged practice, Eelyn works in ensemble with collaborators from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines. Through processes of collective research and improvisation, she creates frameworks for exploring, devising, creating and sharing. She is interested in fictionalising memory and lived experience to create new mythologies and future thinking. Her recent body of work explores notions of fear, monsters, ‘othering’ and ideas of ‘gothic futurism’.

R.M. Sanchez-Camus

Marcelo is a practitioner with a focus on outdoor arts, site-responsive practice, social interventions and the building of support systems for artists working in social art practice. His practice can be understood as comprised of four layers that mutually complement and inform each other: collaborative performance-making; psycho-geographic explorations; visual arts and socially-engaged work. He recent work is in arts and palliative care, with a focus on arts as a therapeutic process in the dying process. His diverse background in visual art, circus arts, immersive theatre, and street theatre is incorporated into his praxis. He published a practice-led research doctorate entitled Applied Live Art: Co-Authorship in Socially Engaged and Site-Responsive Performance Practice.

Ian Nesbitt

Ian Nesbitt uses art to create spaces for exchange that are beyond the everyday, creating networks within communities. His social practice examines ideas of commonality, working alongside citizens and communities to build shared spaces of alterity, and to offer new readings of the territories we inhabit. Spanning interests in radical municipalism, self-organising, landscape politics, and experimental documentary film, his practice is largely collaborative and often lens-based, working with artists and non-artists alike.
